Description

The Vela supernova remnant is material left over from the aftermath of a Type II supernova that occurred about 11,000 years ago. It is only 900 light years away and is huge - about 8 degrees across (To give an idea of scale - the full moon is only a half a degree across). To capture it in all its glory, I chose a small focal length lens - but even then, i did not capture the entirety of this beautiful object.
This image includes a number of RCW objects, including RCW 27, 32, 33, 34 and 35, a planetary nebula designated PNG 263.2+00.4, and a number of open star clusters.
